On the way to Bender: Chitcani Monastery
If you take the route between Tiraspol and Bender that passes through Chitcani, there are two possible roads, this is a good spot for an optional stop. The Chitcani Monastery, also known as Noul Neamt Monastery, is one of the largest Orthodox monasteries in Moldova, founded in 1864. It is known for its impressive cathedral and the country's tallest bell tower, and it makes a peaceful, contemplative pause between the Soviet nostalgia of Tiraspol and the military history waiting for you at Bender Fortress.
Bender Fortress, Ottoman power on the Dniester
A short drive from Tiraspol takes you to Bender, home to one of the best preserved Ottoman fortresses in the region. Built in the 16th century and strategically placed on the banks of the Dniester, Bender Fortress played a key role in the history of Moldova, the Ottoman Empire and Eastern Europe for centuries. Walking along its restored walls and towers, with the river below, is a genuinely striking contrast after the concrete boulevards of Tiraspol. There is a small entrance fee on site, and the fortress is open daily. Give it around an hour to explore properly.
Lunch at the Soviet canteen SSSR
No day in Transnistria feels complete without lunch at the Soviet Canteen SSSR in Bender. This is exactly what it sounds like, a real Soviet style dining hall serving simple, hearty local food in an interior that has barely changed in spirit since the 1980s. Expect a self service style canteen atmosphere, honest home style dishes, and yes, they also serve local beer if you want to make the moment complete.
Two practical notes that matter here: the canteen usually works into the late afternoon, and payment is accepted only in Transnistrian rubles, in cash. Do not expect to pay with euros, lei or a card, our driver will help you exchange or plan for this in advance so lunch goes smoothly.
How to organize this trip with CarPoint

Option two: hire a car with a driver
If you would rather leave the driving, the border crossing and the logistics to someone else, but do not need a full guided tour, book a car with a CarPoint driver for the day. Everything is included, fuel, the driver's service, and the border crossing itself, there is no separate access fee added when you book with a driver. Pricing is by the hour, the first 4 hours are 25 EUR per hour, with a 4 hour minimum order (100 EUR minimum), and 20 EUR per hour from the 5th hour onward.
